A Haiku Diary

Recommended Posts

Guest
I started writing these haikus as a way to discover deeply embedded stories and to let them go.  Then the haikus became about ordinary life and discoveries along the way.  They were posted originally on the AYP site, where my forum name is whippoorwill, and I'm copying them here.  Some of them have titles to give context, and some don't.  I hope to continue finding things to haiku about, and you're welcome to put your own haikus here as well.   :)

Sergeant Mommy

I've seen outhouses
More pristine than this bathroom!
Get up, Lazies! CLEAN!!

***********************************************************

The Bishop will Call

The Bishop will call
And force us to move again
If they don't like us.

***********************************************************

Ambition

Someday you will be
Wife, mother, secretary.
I see. Is that all?

You are infinite,
All creation, boundless love,
And you are nothing.

***********************************************************

Shyness

Look away from me!
I live behind closed curtains,
Afraid to be seen.

***********************************************************

Childhood Poverty

I wander dirt streets,
Gnawing belly, pinching shoes.
Will we go hunting?

***********************************************************

Shame
House, clothes, car, career:
Life has showered abundance.
I don't deserve it.

Daily Visitations from an Imaginary Thief

Bursting through the door,
He comes to take everything.
How to treat this thief?

To the Imaginary Thief:

Good morning! Welcome!
Would you like a cup of tea?
Take it. It's not mine.

Snarling Mother:

Mess with my children,
We will, both of us, find out
Where these lines are drawn.

The Thief:

Where is the trust that
I will treat you lovingly?
I don't have any.

The Thief:

Your children do not
Belong to you; I cannot
Steal what isn't yours.

Mother:

Allow a mother
Her instinct to shield her young.
You created it.

The Thief:

Allow me to be
Exactly what is needed
To be perfect love.

Silence, preacher-man!
Don't use your holy pulpit
To sow division!

They are as they are.
Be what you want them to be.
That is all I ask.

***********************************************************

Peace, child. Cease struggling.
I hold you, love you always.
Trust me and let go.

***********************************************************

People have their own
Doctrine in the religion
Of bagging foodstuffs.

***********************************************************

Unwelcome Advances

Hi there, cutie pie!
I'd like to get to know you.
Gaaahhh! Not on your life!

***********************************************************

Expectations

You should take this class,
Become a yoga teacher.
It will do you good.

***********************************************************

Defensiveness

I get the feeling
You think I should try so much
Harder than I am.

Why do I invest
So much mental energy
Defending myself?

I'm ever fearful
Of being hurt by others,
But I hurt myself.

***********************************************************

It's all on you, Liz
You must hold it together
Or all collapses.

Holding together
Is like restraining the wind.
It blows nonetheless.

***********************************************************

I accept myself
Only if they accept me?
Who needs approval?

***********************************************************

I must get this done
By thus-and-such a date/time.
Who has to? And when?

***********************************************************

What do I want most?
Viewing my thoughts, I find I
Want to be precious.

Why do I believe
That I'm not already all
I wish to become?

***********************************************************

A firefighter
Dreamed of being a hero.
They rescued themselves.

Don't look for my aid.
There's no such thing as rescue.
Extricate yourself.

The paramedic,
The ER doctor, they are
All you. Don't you see?

***********************************************************

Cicadas singing
Louder than a jet turbine.
What is listening?

***********************************************************

A bird lies dying.
Should I speed it on its way?
Who is suffering?

***********************************************************

Kitty bites my hand
Then cringes from the blow, but
I stroke her soft fur.

***********************************************************

I read of masters
And believe nothing they say.
That's not arrogant!

***********************************************************

Take all that I am
And fill the hollow shell with
Radiant being.

***********************************************************

More Sergent Mommy

Yeah, I'm not asking
You to donate a kidney.
Just clean your room, please.

***********************************************************

Teenagers

My teenagers stuff
Their pockets with food as they
Head out the door. Bye!

It's too difficult
To wake up in time to eat
A decent breakfast.

***********************************************************

My cat thinks I'm her
human and this is her house.
Who is deluded?

Everything a gift
Given without condition
Yet I still struggle.

***********************************************************
The Gray Cat

I'm in the bathroom.
The cat stands guard by the door.
Every. Single. Time.

I can do this one
By myself. Honest! I swear!
I will not fall in.

She basks in the sun
On the window ledge, jumps down,
And greets the children.

***********************************************************

Love driving on ice
And snow when it's 12 below.
Hear that engine whiiiiinnnne!

***********************************************************

I beg them to stop,
But they do it anyway.
I scream without sound.

If I freeze, silent,
They may forget that I'm here
And leave me alone.

No running, hiding.
Time for all of this to bask
In the bright sunlight.

***********************************************************

Attachment is the
Profession of a belief
In separation.

It is difficult
To shed a belief while still
Worshipping its form.

***********************************************************

God consciousness borne
On waves of radiant light
Filters through mind's lens.

What is perceived is
Only as clear as the one
Who is perceiving.

***********************************************************

A whole cosmos lives
In the space behind the heart.
Light beats from its depths.

Look up at the sky.
Look up through the crown. Look in
To your heart. It's there.

***********************************************************

Release your father.
Leave the fortress of his arms;
Face the world alone.

When you pass through your
Troubles, you will find that I
Have always been here.

***********************************************************

Release your clinging
To mother's warm breast. Let go
Your crying for milk.

When you wean yourself
From grasping, you will find that
All is provided.

***********************************************************

Acceptance is the
Warrior's prayer. It contains
One simple word: "Yes."

The world's suffering
Is also found within you.
Welcome it in: "Yes."

Acceptance transforms
One's pain into emptiness
And loosens the bonds.

***********************************************************

Sex is unity
For the mind that still believes
In separation.

***********************************************************

What will the future
Bring?  Tell me my part to play
In its unfolding!

Put a straightjacket
On me, so that I can be
More comfortable.

***********************************************************

Realization
Of unity requires
Complete surrender.

I won't realize
Unity if I believe
I can be harmed.

I won't realize
Unity if I believe
I was never here.

It is perceiving
The unique within
The field of infinite me.

Very cool, Liz.  :)

Thanks very much for sharing these.

I really like the "cat by the bathroom door" one ... I don't have any cats currently, but have for much of my life, and so -- I can relate.

True service is not

A means to an end.  It is

Heart's clear expression.

An engrained response

To human pain: project out

And push it away.

Not realizing

We generate perceptions

We then respond to.

Bearing, yet not Possessing

The moment we take

Possession of any thing,

We become heavy.
